Begin Anew operates programs at four locations throughout Middle Tennessee (Woodbine, Downtown Nashville, Madison, and Franklin). Along with weekly Bible study and no-cost programming and care for our students’ children, we offer three education tracks in separate programs to men and to women:

HSE (High School Equivalency/GED) ELL (English Language Learners) accommodating three levels of instruction Computer and Job Skills Training

Under the guidance and direction of the Program Manager, the Computer and Job Skills Teacher will:

Instruct adult students in a small group computer lab setting in the basics of internet browsing and keyboard typing. Then, utilizing PCM Courseware, instruct students on how to use Windows, Word, Excel, and Outlook. Provide life skills instruction such as job applications, interviewing, follow up letters, networking, resume writing, and desirable workplace dress and behaviors. Uphold the mission, vision, and statement of faith of Begin Anew

Previous teaching or tutoring experience is helpful, but not required. We are looking for a willingness to serve and a desire to help others achieve their goals.

Class days and times vary by location. All our locations offer evening classes, and the Franklin location also has daytime classes. We ask that volunteers commit to one 2-hour shift each week for an entire semester.

This position requires volunteers to complete an application and pass a background check. Training and resources will be provided to you by the Program Manager.

Begin Anew operates programs at four locations throughout Middle Tennessee (Woodbine, Downtown Nashville, Madison, and Franklin). We offer classes and tutoring to men and women in High School Equivalency, English Language Learning, and Computer and Job Skills Training, together with weekly Bible study.

We provide no-cost programming for our students’ children to attend while their parents are learning.

Children’s Program Volunteer will agree to uphold the mission, vision, and statement of faith of Begin Anew. Under the guidance and direction of the Children’s Program Coordinator, this volunteer will:

Assist in conducting age-appropriate activities for the children (infant through 5th grade).  This will include a Bible study, help with homework as needed, and time for play Perform other tasks or duties as requested or needed

 
Service days and times vary by location.   All our locations offer evening classes, and our Franklin location also offers daytime classes.  We ask that volunteers commit to one 2.5 hour shift each week.

This position requires volunteers to complete an application and pass a background check.  Training and resources will be provided to you by the Children’s Program Coordinator and/or Program Manager.

• Work closely with and provide regular feedback to the Program Manager

We ask that our volunteers be comfortable working with people from different cultures and have a desire to care for students and assist them in achieving their goals. Some experience working with international populations is helpful in this role, but not necessary. The ability to speak a language other than English is not required.

Class days and times vary by location. All our locations offer evening classes from 6-8pm, and our Franklin location also offers daytime classes from 9am-noon. We ask that volunteers commit to teaching one class each week for an entire semester.

This position requires volunteers to complete an application and pass a background check. Training and resources will be provided to you by the Program Manager.

• Assist adult students in a classroom setting with preparation for the High School Equivalency (GED) test in one of five subjects: Math, Reading, Writing, Social Studies, Science. Instruction is one-on-one or in a small group. Tutors can request a subject they are most comfortable instructing in, and teaching materials with answer keys are provided by the Program Manager.
• Update each student’s weekly work log indicating subject areas studied and next steps
• Develop relationships with students
• Uphold the mission, vision, and statement of faith of Begin Anew

A Greeter/Admin will: Welcome students, volunteers, and guests as they arrive at a site and help provide them with directions to their classroom(s) Assist the Program Manager with receptionist or light clerical work as needed during program hours Uphold the mission, vision, and statement of faith of Begin Anew

Though education is the focus of our program, we feel that relationships and encouragement offer the key to the success. We seek Christian volunteers to walk alongside our students in a mentoring role as they work to achieve their goals.

An Encourager will:

Be paired with one adult student and commit to meeting with him or her for one hour weekly for a one-year period. Encouragers may choose to meet with their student at class locations and attend the Bible Study together before or after their meeting, but meeting times and locations are flexible and at the convenience of the Encourager and the student. Model successful behavior for a student by showing reliability, accountability, promptness, and dependability Provide a listening, supportive relationship in which a student can discuss his or her personal goals and life situation Develop a relationship with a student and become a regular part of his or her life.  (Encouragers can live in fellowship and relationship with students by praying with/for students, sharing scripture, talking about children and jobs, having a meal together, meeting for a walk or shopping, or any other ways that are mutually acceptable.) Receive training and a materials guide with different topics and activities to discuss with the student Share monthly updates about the student’s journey with the Program Manager Uphold the mission, vision, and statement of faith of Begin Anew

No mentoring experience is necessary – just a heart to encourage others.

That is because Begin Anew raises funds through the support of individuals determined to remove all barriers to education.

Digital Fundraising – Start a Facebook campaign, dedicate your birthday, or raise funds through a peer-to-peer campaign. Join an Event Committee – We plan two events each year taking place in Brentwood and Madison. Whether you love decorating, writing, securing tables or sponsorships, we have a place for you! Plan a new fundraising idea – Perhaps your creativity and passion matched with our mission will launch the next IT thing!

A prayer partner will:

Receive training and instruction on how to communicate and care for the student(s) Be paired with one or two adult students at a specific site and commit to praying for the student(s) daily for a six-month period Have one face-to-face meeting with the student(s), then communicate once a week to share scripture and encouragement (This can be done via text, voicemail/phone call, email or mailed card) for a six-month period Model successful behavior for a student by showing reliability, accountability, promptness, and dependability Share monthly updates about the student(s) journey with the Program Manager Uphold the mission, vision, and statement of faith of Begin Anew
