Would you enjoy being a popular resource on all things Medicare for your friends, family and the community?

Then this opportunity is for you! Volunteers with the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) will learn how to break up the complicated issue of Medicare into bite size pieces for others and provide assistance to them in choosing the Medicare plans and assistance options (if applicable) that are right for them. You will learn to provide unbiased and accurate information to anyone you assist. 

SHIP Volunteers will be able to give clients peace of mind and can witness first-hand the impact they are making in the beneficiary's life with the information they provide. 

This training is designed for new volunteers to the program. Attendance of all activities are required to become certified as a counselor. The classes will build on each other, so it is important not to miss a session.

For volunteers who'd like to attend events to share Medicare information and do plan comparisons or administrative work for the program but NO direct client counseling there is the option to attend just up to the second-class session.

Any volunteer who would like to be a full counselor will need to attend the full curriculum (all three class sessions as well as participate in the required activities in-between the sessions). Full certification as a counselor requires a minimum of 12 hours of in class training AND additional mentoring thereafter until the volunteer is able to provide counseling on their own.

Volunteer: Gardening at the Shelby Bottoms Nature Center

Want to get your hands dirty and enjoy some time in the great outdoors? The Shelby Bottoms Nature Center is looking for a few helpful hands to do some weeding, trimming, watering, and anything else to help make their garden as beautiful as possible!

What will volunteers be doing at this event?

Volunteers will be using hand tools to remove weeds, trim back overgrown plants, lay down mulch, water plants, and other tasks to tend to their pollinator and vegetable garden.

What is the community impact of this event?

The Shelby Bottoms Nature Center provides numerous educational opportunities for people of all ages, all for free, and helping tend to their garden creates a welcoming environment for people to learn in! This garden is meant to show people the power of pollinators and planting plants in harmony with one another, so by keeping it healthy, the community will in turn have a beautiful, functional space to learn and gather in.

Accessibility:

The garden is located off of the paved greenway, meaning being able to move over an unpaved surface is required. Volunteers will need to be able to either use at least one hand or have a way to hold hand tools in order to dig and weed in the dirt. Kneeling in the dirt will happen for the majority of the event, and you will have chances to take breaks. This spot is largely unshaded, so please be mindful of sun exposure (sunscreen can be provided, but dressing according to the weather is important). There is a large parking lot located in front of the Nature Center with an overflow lot as well. The Nature Center has running water and restrooms on site.

What should volunteers bring or wear?

Volunteers should wear closed-toe shoes and long socks for your safety. Long pants are best for protecting your knees, but please be mindful of the temperatures. Want to get your hands dirty and enjoy some time in the great outdoors? The Shelby Bottoms Nature Center is looking for a few helpful hands to do some weeding, trimming, watering, and anything else to help make their garden as beautiful as possible!

What will volunteers be doing at this event?

Volunteers will be using hand tools to remove weeds, trim back overgrown plants, lay down mulch, water plants, and other tasks to tend to their pollinator and vegetable garden.

What is the community impact of this event?

The Shelby Bottoms Nature Center provides numerous educational opportunities for people of all ages, all for free, and helping tend to their garden creates a welcoming environment for people to learn in! This garden is meant to show people the power of pollinators and planting plants in harmony with one another, so by keeping it healthy, the community will in turn have a beautiful, functional space to learn and gather in.

Accessibility:

The garden is located off of the paved greenway, meaning being able to move over an unpaved surface is required. Volunteers will need to be able to either use at least one hand or have a way to hold hand tools in order to dig and weed in the dirt. Kneeling in the dirt will happen for the majority of the event, and you will have chances to take breaks. This spot is largely unshaded, so please be mindful of sun exposure (sunscreen can be provided, but dressing according to the weather is important). There is a large parking lot located in front of the Nature Center with an overflow lot as well. The Nature Center has running water and restrooms on site.

What should volunteers bring or wear?

Volunteers should wear closed-toe shoes and long socks for your safety. Long pants are best for protecting your knees, but please be mindful of the temperatures. Volunteer: Medicare Plan Comparison Training and Workshop 2025

GNRC's Medicare Counseling Program is partnering with local universities for a Medicare Training focused on Plan Comparisons and a workshop day to help people in the community with their plan comparison requests that they have mailed in during the Annual Open Enrollment Period. 

We will hold a virtual training via Microsoft Teams on Wednesday, October 8, 2025, from 8am to 12pm during which you will learn the basics of Medicare as well as how to do plan comparisons for beneficiaries. Please note that this training is ONLY for those interested in participating in the plan comparison workshop on October 31st. If you are interested in learning Medicare basics but don't want to or can't attend the workshop, let your professor know and we will provide that opportunity for you at another time. 

At the end of the training, you will take the certification test and be officially certified to complete Medicare plan comparisons. Certification is valid for one year. Update training is required annually to maintain certification. 

Those wishing to become full Medicare counselors (able to counsel directly) can pursue further training with GNRC. 

On October 31, 2025, from 8am to 12pm we will meet in person at Lipscomb University (details on room location and parking to be forthcoming via email for those who sign up) to have a plan comparison workshop. We will put the training to use and complete plan comparisons for people in the community who have mailed in their requests to SHIP. You will be able to make a big difference for people, helping them evaluate their best options for a Medicare Plan for the next year. Attendance of the training and successful certification is required to attend the workshop.

Additional opportunities to help with plan comparisons beyond the plan comparison workshop are available for those interested.

We need volunteers who will participate with us to provide respite care for families with special needs.  We meet one Saturday of every month, from October-May.  We stay as a large group the entire night- you will never be alone with our participants.  We plan the evening from start to finish.  You will be partnered 1:1 with a buddy and we ask that engage with them for the duration of the night.  Nights can include games, crafts, stories, sensory play, outdoor play, meals, movie time, etc...  You will be provided all the resources that you need to have a night of fun with your buddy.

We need volunteers who will participate with us to provide respite care for families with special needs.  We meet one Saturday of every month, from October-May.  We stay as a large group the entire night- you will never be alone with our participants.  We plan the evening from start to finish.  You will be partnered 1:1 with a buddy and we ask that engage with them for the duration of the night.  Nights can include games, crafts, stories, sensory play, outdoor play, meals, movie time, etc...  You will be provided all the resources that you need to have a night of fun with your buddy.

Saddle Up! could not operate without the dedicated help of an army of volunteers from our community. There are numerous positions that require a wide variety of talents.  All volunteers MUST attend New Volunteer Training before participating in any of the below listed opportunities.

Sidewalkers

This volunteer interacts with and helps our special riders. Assigned to a particular rider in a riding lesson, this volunteer helps the rider get the horse ready, helps them get on the horse, and walks next to the rider throughout the mounted portion of the lesson providing support as needed. This is the person most involved with helping our special needs riders. Sidewalkers must be at least 16 years-old and able to walk briskly beside a horse for an average of 30 minutes. There are opportunities to sidewalk on a weekly basis or sub in as a sidewalker on any days when you are available.

 

Leaders* (weekly commitment for the duration of a program session)

This volunteer is in charge of a horse in a riding lesson. They pre-groom the horse before the lesson, help with tacking, and lead the horse throughout the lesson. Most riders who have leaders are unable to fully control their horse. After the lesson, they are responsible for putting the horse back where it needs to go and returning all equipment to the tack room. Leaders are volunteers over the age of 16 and must be able to walk at a fast pace for 30 minutes and jog intermittently during the lesson. They should be very comfortable with horses and react calmly if an incident arises.

Help us bring some cheer to isolated seniors, seniors in nursing homes and/or disabled individuals in our communities by sending them heartfelt letters. We are looking for uplifting letters that will bring their recipients some joy!

This month we are looking for letters or cards around the theme of Winter/Holiday wishes. You can incorporate the theme through art, by making your own themed cards and within the message of your letter.

If you are interested in sending letters and/or art to seniors in the community, please sign up below and include in your response (in the notes) how many letters you would like to write. I will contact you with specific instructions for the letters and the address to send them to. Children are welcome to contribute (an adult is required for minors to sign up).
 
We are looking to have this round of letters completed and received by their recipients by 12/31/2025. Please allow a couple of days for mailing and distribution. If you are mailing letters for a specific holiday and would like them to arrive and be distributed before then, please mail the letters at least 1.5 weeks prior. For example, Christmas letters should be mailed at the latest by December 13th, so that staff at the facility have enough time to distribute the letters to the residents.
 
What do you need to provide? Volunteers will be required to have their own materials for the letters and any additional artwork you'd like to add, as well as stamps to mail the letters on hand (or you must be able to take them to the post office). I will try my best to provide you with one address for your letters so you can mail them together in a large envelope. 

Need your service hours confirmed? Please track and log the actual time you spent working on the letters/cards here in the volunteer portal AND submit pictures of your letters as proof. Please note that we do NOT assign a specific number of letters per hour. Attend an in-person orientation at Cockrill Elementary where our RIF book room is located. (We will have several dates available in August/September.) Sign a volunteer policy waiver. Complete a background check, paid for by Book'em, if one has not been done for you in 5+ years.Be assigned an elementary school & teacher at one of our participating RIF schools.  Contact your assigned teacher to schedule your visits for dates/times that work for you both.  Prepare for your visit in advance by thoughtfully reading through your chosen read-aloud books. Go to our RIF book room at Cockrill Elementary School to choose books to take to your students before each visit. If you are paired at Dodson, Glengarry or Paragon Mills, you can access a RIF Book Room at those schools. Spend ~20 minutes reading aloud and engaging with your assigned class at each visit.  Help your students select books to keep from the ones you brought for them.  Log the number of books distributed and time donated on our online portal after each visit.  Complete a volunteer survey at the end of the school year.Note: this is a year-long commitment.

Help us bring some cheer to isolated seniors, seniors in nursing homes and/or disabled individuals in our communities by sending them heartfelt letters, letting them know that we care and haven't forgotten about them.

We are looking for uplifting letters that will bring their recipients some joy!

This month we are looking for letters or cards around the theme of Fall or Halloween. You can incorporate the theme through art, by making your own themed cards and within the message of your letter.

If you are interested in sending letters and/or art to seniors in the community, please sign up below and include in your response (in the notes) how many letters you would like to write. I will contact you with specific instructions for the letters and the address to send them to. Children are welcome to contribute also (an adult is required for minors to sign up).
 
We are looking to have this round of letters completed and received by their recipients by 10/31/2025. Please allow a couple of days for mailing and distribution.

Title of Position: Adult Education - ESL Intern

Internship Period:Flexible 

Purpose: The Adult Education program supports English language learners as they integrate into life in the US. Through programs like Citizenship Instruction, High School Equivalency, and English literacy courses, the department helps to shape the future for immigrants and refugees across Nashville. As an Adult Education Intern, you will gain valuable experience as you are trained to teach classes,  

implement curriculum, and contribute to administrative processes which support the overall program. In-person availability is required, though there will be opportunities for remote work. 

Commitment: 

Minimum: 10 hours per week

Maximum: 24 hours per week

Tuesday and Thursday availability required, preference for 6PM-8PM availability. The specific schedule to be negotiated with the supervisor. 

Duties/Experiences:The Adult Education program supports English language learners as they integrate into life in the US. As an Adult Education ESL Intern, you will help with all aspects of ESL programming including:

Training: Attend an initial orientation meeting with the program manager. Attend ongoing training as required by the supervisor. Participate in mid-semester and end-of-semester performance evaluations.

Internship Period:Flexible 

Purpose: The Adult Education program supports English language learners as they integrate into life in the US. Through programs like Citizenship Instruction, High School Equivalency, and English literacy courses, the department helps to shape the future for immigrants and refugees across Nashville. As an Adult Education Intern, you will gain valuable experience as you are trained to teach classes,  

implement curriculum, and contribute to administrative processes which support the overall program. In-person availability is required, though there will be opportunities for remote work. 

Commitment: 

Minimum: 10 hours per week

Our Adult Education Program has been a cornerstone in helping newcomers integrate seamlessly into our community. As a volunteer teacher, you'll play a crucial role in this heartwarming process. But it's not just about teaching English; it's about being a cultural ambassador and a friendly face in the Nashville area. Your presence will make a real difference.


*No teaching certification is required to embark on this rewarding journey; however, we do recommend some teaching experience.

*Volunteers must be 18 or older.

*You'll have the opportunity to lead 1.5-hour lessons one evening per week for a 12-week term, with a curriculum and syllabus provided.

*Our fall term classes will meet online via Zoom

GNRC is partnering with Trevecca Towers to pair Friendly Visitors with Residents at the Senior Living Highrise. Residents at Trevecca Towers are 62 years and up, some are younger if they have a disability. Many of the residents are quite isolated and would greatly benefit from a connection with a community volunteer. 

Commitment: Spend time regularly with your assigned residents at least once a month. Visits can vary in length based on mutual comfort. Once you have been matched, visits can be coordinated directly between resident and volunteer. 

You can spend time talking, playing games, reading, doing crafts or crossword puzzles depending on mutual interest. Many residents are also interested in help navigating their cell phone. So, if you are well versed and able to help spent some time explaining how to do things, that would be appreciated. Some clients need help with light household tasks.

Next steps: Please express interest in the opportunity and we will reach out to you with more details, to match you with a resident and to schedule an initial visit. After the initial visit you will be able to schedule your visits directly with the residents independently. If you'd like to visit more than one resident, we can arrange for that as well.

Make a dogs weekend!  Take a dog on a bow-wow breakout and let them spend time chilling at home, walking on the greenway, or whatever other fun event you can think of!  A bow-wow breakout helps our dogs get a break from the kennel and introduces them to new people, environments, and new experiences...and it helps them get adopted! 

This is the volunteering option for you if you need a small amount of hours! 

Available 12-4pm 7 days a week.  All dogs must return to the shelter by 4pm. 

If you do keep the dog at your residence overnight the maximum number of service hours you can receive will be 8 hours per day.    

No dogs are allowed overnights at any campus housing.  If you live off-campus you MUST provide MACC staff written permission from your landlord that dogs are ok on the premises overnight.
