Volunteer: Virtual Visits Volunteer

Conversations to Remember is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, dedicated towards combating loneliness and isolation felt by senior citizens. Our virtual visit program matches 2-3 college students with residents of long-term care, assisted living, and memory care communities for virtual video visits. These residents have been suffering from isolation, and students really brighten their days just by speaking with them. We provide training to the students in the program about the best ways to interact with the seniors, as well as additional support throughout their service. Since these visits are virtual, students can do it without any travel. This is both convenient and allows more of the volunteers' time to be spent volunteering, rather than commuting to their volunteering location. We provide this program free of charge to seniors across the country, and have students from around the country as well. Typically, students volunteer 1-2 hours per week. Each call lasts up to one hour, based on the senior's attention span and mood on each day. We expect students to volunteer for approximately 16 weeks, so that they can build a friendship with the senior. This does not need to coincide with the start of a semester, as we have new seniors starting all the time and train new volunteers weekly. The students are matched based on the times that they're available with a senior who is available at the same time, and they will have a regular, weekly appointment for their visit. Students wishing more visits or other opportunities that allow them to volunteer more hours can be accommodated with different ways to volunteer, such as assisting us with our social media, call support, or marketing. Please register to volunteer on our website, at https://conversationstoremember.org/volunteer.

Volunteer: Initial Training for Medicare Volunteers - February 2026 Cohort

Do you find Medicare interesting?

Would you enjoy being a popular resource on all things Medicare for your friends, family and the community?

Then this opportunity is for you! Volunteers with the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) will learn how to break up the complicated issue of Medicare into bite size pieces for others and provide assistance to them in choosing the Medicare plans and assistance options (if applicable) that are right for them. You will learn to provide unbiased and accurate information to anyone you assist.

SHIP Volunteers will be able to give clients peace of mind and can witness first-hand the impact they are making in the beneficiary's life with the information they provide.

This training is designed for new volunteers to the program. Attendance of all activities are required to become certified as a counselor. The classes will build on each other, so it is important not to miss a session.

For volunteers who'd like to attend events to share Medicare information and do plan comparisons or administrative work for the program but NO direct client counseling there is the option to attend just up to the second-class session.

Any volunteer who would like to be a full counselor will need to attend the full curriculum (all three class sessions as well as participate in the required activities in-between the sessions). Full certification as a counselor requires a minimum of 12 hours of in class training AND additional mentoring thereafter until the volunteer is able to provide counseling on their own.

Medicare Volunteer Certification Curriculum

Class 1: Thursday, February 5 from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm (virtual via Microsoft Teams)

Class 2: Thursday, February 12 from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm (in-person at GNRC's offices)

Class 3: Thursday, February 26 from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm (in-person at GNRC's offices)

Part of your training is hands-on experience. You can participate in a variety of different events. The event schedule will be provided during the first session. In addition, we will schedule counseling calls for you to observe. You will be asked to provide your availability to shadow counseling calls between the 2nd and 3rd class.

We will go over the training schedule with you to determine what level of training and commitment is best for you. Application forms and initial conversation with the Volunteer Manager are required for participation. Volunteers who can be involved regularly usually do best with this type of volunteer opportunity as it is very knowledge based. Please reach out with any questions to Rebecca at rnofi@gnrc.org.

Volunteer: Letters to Seniors - February 2026

Help us bring some cheer to isolated seniors, seniors in nursing homes and/or disabled individuals in our communities by sending them heartfelt letters, letting them know that we care and haven't forgotten about them.

We are looking for uplifting letters that will bring their recipients some joy!

This month we are looking for Love themed letters and cards. You can incorporate the theme through art, by making your own themed cards and within the message of your letter. If you like, you can also include Valentines.

If you are interested in sending letters and/or art to seniors in the community, please sign up below and include in your response (in the notes) how many letters you would like to write. I will contact you with specific instructions for the letters and the address to send them to. Children are welcome to contribute also (an adult is required for minors to sign up).

We are looking to have this round of letters completed and received by their recipients by 02/28/2026. Delivery before Valentine's Day would be ideal, if it's possible for you. Please allow a couple of days for mailing and distribution.

Volunteers will be required to have their own materials for the letters and any additional artwork you'd like to add, as well as stamps to mail the letters on hand (or you must be able to take them to the post office). I will try my best to provide you with one address for your letters so you can mail them together in a large envelope.

Please allow 48 hours for me to get back to you with the instructions.

If you are in need of community service hours, I am happy to confirm your hours for you. Please submit pictures of your letters as proof. We will be tracking and logging the actual time you spent working on the letters/cards and do NOT assign a specific number of letters per hour. Please check with your institution if they have specific requirements of how many letters you need to complete to get your hours approved.

Thank you so much for considering this opportunity!

Volunteer: Trainer for Digital Literacy Class in Waverly, TN

In partnership with the Humphreys County Chamber of Commerce, GNRC is hosting a digital literacy class for older adults in Waverly, TN.

Are you interested in teaching a basic computer skills class to a group of 10 older adults?

All training and material will be provided.

This opportunity requires NO formal teaching experience or a background in IT. A basic understanding of computers is all that’s needed along with a patient demeanor and the desire to bridge the digital gap for older adults in our community.

The class schedule is flexible and will be set together with the volunteer trainer. Ideally, classes will be offered in the mornings at the Waverly Senior Center. Total class time is 15 hours of instruction. An example class schedule could be 1.5-hour class twice a week for 5 weeks.

Trainers teach 15 hours of digital skills training to members of their community who want to develop their computer skills. Trainers will be issued a Chromebook (on loan) and receive training on a ready-made curriculum to guide the course content. Trainers will also have the support of Tech Goes Home staff and GNRC.

Characteristics of good trainers: Trainers do not need to be computer wizards, but they need to be comfortable using Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Sheets. Trainers must feel comfortable searching for answers online. It is most important that trainers are patient, compassioned educators.

Time commitment: The total time commitment for trainers is about 35 hours over the course of several weeks. In addition to trainer orientation (4 hours) each course will require 3 hours of logistics and communication with the team; 15 hours of class; 5 hours of make-up class(es); 6-8 hours of prep work (about an hour per class).

Trainers may be eligible to receive a stipend for teaching the course.

Please express interest in the opportunity and we will follow up with you on next steps and can answer any questions you may have.

Volunteer: Lunch Buddy Mentor

Do you have 1 hour that you are willing to give to a student each week? If so, we would love for you to consider becoming a LUNCH BUDDY!

Lunch Buddies are volunteers who go into a school to meet with a student once a week during the student's lunch period. The volunteer and student have some time together to build a relationship and do various activities together, including playing games, coloring and reading books together.

This is a program where volunteers get to help students see and reach their full potential, because at PTM, we know that close positive relationships help students THRIVE!

All participating schools are elementary or middle schools in Northwest Nashville.

Lunch times range from 10:00am to 1:00pm.

Volunteers will need their own reliable transportation to get to each visit.

This is the volunteer need we are recruiting for MOST! Our goal at PTM is for every student to have a mentor, and students LOVE having a Lunch Buddy! We are especially in need of male Lunch Buddies as we have many male students asking for a Lunch Buddy and few male mentors!

Volunteer: Invasive Plant Removal - Winter/Spring 2026

Do you love conservation? Want to work outdoors to protect the natural ecosystems of Shelby Park and Bottoms? We need you!

Shelby Park and Bottoms is a natural oasis in the heart of the city. The forests here are a refuge for people and wildlife alike. Our Shelby forests need help: they are being overtaken by invasive plant species. Through our Restore the Forest program, we remove invasive species and replant native species to revitalize a healthy forest ecosystem.

What is the community impact of this event?

Healthy forests are beautiful for park visitors, provide food and shelter for wildlife and make our local ecosystem more resilient by promoting and enhancing growth of native plant species.

What will volunteers be doing at this event?

At this event, we will be uprooting and cutting down honeysuckle and privet plants with weed wrenches, loppers, and hand saws. They will work in small groups under the supervision of experienced staff that will help teach proper plant identification and safe tool usage.

Accessibility:

This event will include hiking while carrying heavy tools over uneven ground, and we will be working off-trail within the woods. Please dress according to the weather. Porta-potties are located a short walk from our worksite, and there should always be ample parking located nearby the worksite.

What to bring?

I recommend bringing your own water bottle and sunscreen. Water, gloves, all necessary tools, and additional water will be provided. Please wear sturdy shoes that are good for gardening (e.g. hiking boots), long socks, and long pants to protect yourselves from sticks and thorns in the forest. If possible, long sleeved shirts can also be helpful for protection, but please dress according to the weather.

What’s next?

If you sign up for this event, you will receive a reminder email a few days before the event with specific instructions regarding parking and any other necessary information.

If you have questions, please send me an email at cd@friendsofshelby.org. Hope to see you out there!

Volunteer: Spring Syposium SL

HBCU Spring Symposium, hosted as part of the HBCU Wellness Project, served as a collaborative forum to present and discuss findings collected directly from students regarding health, wellness, and campus needs. Student feedback highlighted key themes related to mental health, access to resources, preventive care awareness, and overall well-being. Community partners provided professional insight and contextualized student findings within broader public health and service frameworks, offering recommendations for program enhancement and sustainability. Legislator feedback further emphasized the importance of student-informed data in shaping responsive wellness initiatives and strengthening community–campus collaboration. Together, these perspectives reinforced the value of cross-sector dialogue and affirmed the role of student voices in informing future wellness efforts and community partnerships.

Volunteer: Foster a Dog for the Spring Semester!

Now that you're settled back in school and the weather is colder, isn't it time to foster a warm, furry dog? Fostering a dog is the perfect way to relax and have fun with a cuddly friend, without the long-term commitment.

Pawster provides all training, supplies, veterinary care and transportation. You just give them love, attention and lots of cuddles! Plus, it's flexible - you get your volunteer hours just by giving your foster pet a safe and loving home.

When you foster with Pawster, you help people too! Pawster provides "Crisis Foster Care." That means the dog or cat you are fostering already has an owner, but they are temporarily unable to care for their pet. You take care of their pet until the owner is back on their feet and ready to be reunited. Don't worry, your information is confidential, but Pawster Fosters say the most rewarding part is when they get to see their foster pet go home to their family.

Sign up today! If you love dogs, then you are fully qualified to be a Pawster Foster!

**NOTE: Belmont, Fisk and Trevecca Universities, do NOT allow pets in on-campus housing. This opportunity is only available to students who live off-campus and whose landlords allow pets. All students should verify with their landlords that pets are allowed before signing up to foster.

Volunteer: Letters to Seniors - March 2026

Help us bring some cheer to isolated seniors, seniors in nursing homes and/or disabled individuals in our communities by sending them heartfelt letters, letting them know that we care and haven't forgotten about them.

We are looking for uplifting letters that will bring their recipients some joy!

This month you are welcome to incorporate poetry in your theme for your letters in honor of World Poetry Day. You can incorporate the theme through art, by making your own themed cards and within the message of your letter. If you'd rather write about something else, you are welcome to do so as well.

If you are interested in sending letters and/or art to seniors in the community, please sign up below and include in your response (in the notes) how many letters you would like to write. I will contact you with specific instructions for the letters and the address to send them to. Children are welcome to contribute also (an adult is required for minors to sign up).

We are looking to have this round of letters completed and received by their recipients by 03/31/2026.

Children younger than 13 are welcome to participate with an adult/guardian supervising and responsible for mailing the letters.

Thank you so much for considering this opportunity!

Volunteer: Letters to Seniors - January 2026

Help us bring some cheer to isolated seniors, seniors in nursing homes and/or disabled individuals in our communities by sending them heartfelt letters. We are looking for uplifting letters that will bring their recipients some joy!

This month we are looking for letters or cards around the theme of new beginnings/winter. You can incorporate the theme through art, by making your own themed cards and within the message of your letter.

If you are interested in sending letters and/or art to seniors in the community, please sign up below and include in your response (in the notes) how many letters you would like to write. I will contact you with specific instructions for the letters and the address to send them to. Children are welcome to contribute (an adult is required for minors to sign up).

We are looking to have this round of letters completed and received by their recipients by 1/31/2025. Please allow a couple of days (we recommend at least a week) for mailing and distribution.

What do you need to provide? Volunteers will be required to have their own materials for the letters and any additional artwork you'd like to add, as well as stamps to mail the letters on hand (or you must be able to take them to the post office). I will try my best to provide you with one address for your letters so you can mail them together in a large envelope.

Need your service hours confirmed? Please track and log the actual time you spent working on the letters/cards here in the volunteer portal AND submit pictures of your letters as proof. Please note that we do NOT assign a specific number of letters per hour. Please check with your institution if they have specific requirements of how many letters you need to complete to get your hours approved.

Thank you so much for considering this opportunity!

Volunteer: Initial Training for Medicare Volunteers - August 2026 Cohort

Class 1: Thursday, August 6 from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm (virtual via Microsoft Teams)

Class 2: Friday, August 14 from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm (in-person at GNRC's offices)

Class 3: Friday, August 21 from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm (in-person at GNRC's offices)

Part of your training is hands-on experience. You can participate in a variety of different events. The event schedule will be provided during the first session. In addition, we will schedule counseling calls for you to observe. You will be asked to provide your availability to shadow counseling calls prior to the start of the cohort.

Volunteer: Letter to the Editor/Op-Ed Writing - Virtual Opportunity

Learn about the current state of food, environmental, and relevant policy, such as the FISCAL Act, the Farm Bill, and other local bills. Then, write a letter to the editor responding to a published article about one of these bills or an op-ed sharing your viewpoint more generally about these policy proposals. Attempt to get your piece published in a school newspaper, a local outlet, or even a regional or national one!

Stages:

Investigation

Research and identify potential topics within the broader topic of food choices and environment that are relevant to current legislation or recent articles published in the local press. The timeline of submitting op-eds is looser than LTEs, which typically need to be submitted quite quickly after the piece to which the LTE is responding is printed.

Survey your community to better understand what they care about related to this issue.

Preparation and Planning

Research the specific issue, its consequences, and where it stands in the legislative process (if legislation) independently and with the support of Switch4Good materials and team.

Organize research and develop a succinct argument that can be written in a few paragraphs.

Research press outlets local to the district in which the legislation is being proposed, including student newspapers. Note their submission requirements and methods, including word count and whether they have an online form or accept email submissions.

Action

Write! The most effective letters to the editor are typically short, only a couple of paragraphs long. Op-eds are usually a bit longer, but not by much. The length will be determined by the guidelines of each publication.

Reach out to personal, professional, and academic connections for edits and revisions. Lucy from Switch4Good is also available for review at any point during these steps.

Demonstration

Pitch the LTE or op-ed to the press outlets you found in your research!

Repeat steps up to this point for each LTE or op-ed written.

Deliverables:

Documentation of research and planning (notes, outline, etc.)

Documentation of editing and revision (track changes, comments, edited and final drafts, etc.)

Final drafts of at least five letters to the editor or op-eds

Documentation of pitching LTEs or op-eds to press outlets, including any publication

This engaging program captivates audiences with music composed and arranged for the unique reverb of the Parthenon Naos , performed in front of the spectacular 42-foot statue of Athena.

ABOUT THIS PERFORMANCE:

A distinct Nashville treasure, Lockeland Strings returns to ECHO by popular demand. This global music collective is a community arts organization that showcases local artists accompanied by string quartet. They have performed internationally and collaborated with the likes of Kacey Musgraves, Lucie Silvas, and more. The evening will also showcase singer-songwriters backed by the Lockeland Strings ensemble. These special guests will be announced at a later date.

What will volunteers do?

Volunteers will help with event set-up and tear-down, checking tickets in the lobby, ushering, and distributing information and surveys about future events, membership and the Centennial Park Conservancy.

Set-up begins at 4:30PM SHARP

Concert is at 7:30 PM (doors open by 7 PM)

Tear-down starts at the conclusion of the concerts and usually winds up no later than 10:30pm

You may come for half shifts if necessary (4:30 till show starts and showtime through teardown) but we would prefer volunteers who can be dedicated to the whole evening, setup, show and teardown. Please let us know in advance if you can't stay for the whole event.

Volunteer: Foster a Pet for the Holidays with Pawster

Staying in town for Thanksgiving and December holidays? Why not invite a foster dog or cat into your home while their fosters are out of town?!?

Perks:

You foster pets who are already in foster care - no unknowns!
Short-term - Current fosters will only leave town for a few days to a week!
Holiday fostering is a low-commitment, highly rewarding way to help pets stay warm during the holidays.

Pawster provides Crisis Foster Care for dogs and cats. When a dog owner is temporarily unable to care for their dog due to crisis, you foster their dog until the owner is back on their feet. Sign up to be a Pawster Foster, and you help a dog and their person. Invite a furry friend into your home today, and you will help keep a family together.

Pawster provides all training and supplies. You just bring your time, energy, and love. You decide how long you want to foster!

**NOTE: Belmont, Fisk and Trevecca Universities, do NOT allow pets in on-campus housing. This opportunity is only available to students who live off-campus and whose landlords allow pets. All students should verify with their landlords that pets are allowed before signing up to foster.

Volunteer: Wednesday Night- Special Needs Buddy

On Wednesday nights, our one-on-one buddies provide supports that allow our friends to be engaged either in their age-appropriate ministry and/or our Special Needs Ministry area. We offer support during the Wednesday night programming from 6:00pm - 7:30pm.

You will not need to assist anyone in the bathroom, but you may color or build with legos or read a book or even push a swing. We share the gospel in all of these ways so that they can learn about God in the way that best suits their learning style.

Volunteer: Murfreesboro In-Patient Unit Volunteers

We have two roles for volunteers at our Murfreesboro In-Patient Unit. This is an hour from Belmont campus.

The first role is at the front desk. A shift there is 3-4 hours, once a week or once every-other-week. It involves sitting at the desk and welcoming guests, showing them how to sign in, and if they need additional assistance, walking them to the room they're there to visit. Students are able to bring a laptop or books to study during this time.

The other role is for anywhere between 1-4 hours, depending on volunteer availability. It involves pushing our hospitality cart from room to room, offering snacks and other comfort items to patients and their guests. Some guests only want a treat and others want the volunteer to spend time with them, talking about their lives.

There is also the additional opportunity for a musical volunteer to visit patients and play/sing for them.

If you are interested in this, please apply here.

Thank you!

Volunteer: Visit hospice patients at home and/or in nursing homes

We have ongoing needs for volunteers to support our patients and their loved ones. Patients at home often need someone to sit with them, so that their caregiver can leave the home to run errands or attend appointments. Patients who live alone benefit from companionship visits and even a volunteer who may help tidy their home or cook for them. Patients who have pets may wish for a volunteer to spend time with their animals (dog walking or playing with pets). Musicians can play/sing for patients. Volunteers who enjoy arts and crafts can guide patients in creating.

Patients in nursing homes often don't have anyone to visit them or their loved ones worry because they aren't able to visit as often as they'd like. Volunteers who visit patients in facilities talk with or read to patients, help their patients participate in facility activities like Bingo or meal times.

Most patients who want a volunteer only need a once a week visit. The visits are typically between 2-4 hours, depending on volunteer availability. Depending on a patient's condition, a volunteer may only visit once or they may have a long-term relationship.

Volunteering is typically flexible with the volunteers' availability.
If you are interested, please apply here.
