Volunteer: Foster a DogMissing your dog back home? We've got the next best thing. Being away at school often means being away from your four-legged best friend, too. If you're missing your daily walks, tail wags, and puppy cuddles, fostering a dog through Pawster is a meaningful way to fill that gap while helping a family in need. Pawster provides everything you need, including training, supplies, veterinary care, and transportation. You provide the belly rubs, walks, treats, and a safe place to stay. Fostering is flexible enough to fit a college schedule. There's no long-term commitment, and you can earn volunteer hours simply by opening your home to a dog who needs temporary care. When you foster with Pawster, you're helping more than just a dog. Pawster specializes in Crisis Foster Care, which means your foster dog already has a loving owner who is temporarily unable to care for them. You'll give them a safe, caring home until they're ready to be reunited. While your information remains confidential, Pawster fosters often say the most rewarding moment is watching their foster dog return home to the family that loves them. Whether you're missing your dog from home, looking for a reason to get outside between classes, or hoping to make a difference this semester, fostering is a rewarding way to help a pup, and the people who love them. Sign up today! If you love dogs, you're already qualified to be a Pawster Foster. **NOTE: Belmont, Fisk and Trevecca Universities, do NOT allow pets in on-campus housing. This opportunity is only available to students who live off-campus and whose landlords allow pets. All students should verify with their landlords that pets are allowed before signing up to foster. Volunteer: Initial Training for Medicare Volunteers - August 2026 CohortDo you find Medicare interesting? Would you enjoy being a popular resource on all things Medicare for your friends, family and the community? Then this opportunity is for you! Volunteers with the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) will learn how to break up the complicated issue of Medicare into bite size pieces for others and provide assistance to them in choosing the Medicare plans and assistance options (if applicable) that are right for them. You will learn to provide unbiased and accurate information to anyone you assist. SHIP Volunteers will be able to give clients peace of mind and can witness first-hand the impact they are making in the beneficiary's life with the information they provide. This training is designed for new volunteers to the program. Attendance of all activities are required to become certified as a counselor. The classes will build on each other, so it is important not to miss a session. For volunteers who'd like to attend events to share Medicare information and do plan comparisons or administrative work for the program but NO direct client counseling there is the option to attend just up to the second-class session. Any volunteer who would like to be a full counselor will need to attend the full curriculum (all three class sessions as well as participate in the required activities in-between the sessions). Full certification as a counselor requires a minimum of 12 hours of in class training AND additional mentoring thereafter until the volunteer is able to provide counseling on their own. Medicare Volunteer Certification Curriculum Class 1: Thursday, August 6 from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm (virtual via Microsoft Teams) Class 2: Friday, August 14 from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm (in-person at GNRC's offices) Class 3: Friday, August 21 from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm (in-person at GNRC's offices) Part of your training is hands-on experience. You can participate in a variety of different events. The event schedule will be provided during the first session. In addition, we will schedule counseling calls for you to observe. You will be asked to provide your availability to shadow counseling calls prior to the start of the cohort. We will go over the training schedule with you to determine what level of training and commitment is best for you. Application forms and initial conversation with the Volunteer Manager are required for participation. Volunteers who can be involved regularly usually do best with this type of volunteer opportunity as it is very knowledge based. Please reach out with any questions to Rebecca at rnofi@gnrc.org. Volunteer: Recipes Innovation on Campus - Virtual OpportunityLearn about the benefits of plant-based diets for environmental and social justice. Choose popular meals from on-campus eateries and learn how they can be made plant-based. Research emissions saved from making the recipe plant-based rather than animal-product-inclusive. Communicate and propose the resources and your recipes to dining staff at your university. Stages: Investigation Survey students on campus, aiming to gather data from a variety of student demographics, on the most-consumed meals/dishes from on campus eateries and dining halls. Volunteer: Virtual Visits VolunteerConversations to Remember is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, dedicated towards combating loneliness and isolation felt by senior citizens. Our virtual visit program matches 2-3 college students with residents of long-term care, assisted living, and memory care communities for virtual video visits. These residents have been suffering from isolation, and students really brighten their days just by speaking with them. We provide training to the students in the program about the best ways to interact with the seniors, as well as additional support throughout their service. Since these visits are virtual, students can do it without any travel. This is both convenient and allows more of the volunteers' time to be spent volunteering, rather than commuting to their volunteering location. We provide this program free of charge to seniors across the country, and have students from around the country as well. Typically, students volunteer 1-2 hours per week. Each call lasts up to one hour, based on the senior's attention span and mood on each day. We expect students to volunteer for approximately 16 weeks, so that they can build a friendship with the senior. This does not need to coincide with the start of a semester, as we have new seniors starting all the time and train new volunteers weekly. The students are matched based on the times that they're available with a senior who is available at the same time, and they will have a regular, weekly appointment for their visit. Students wishing more visits or other opportunities that allow them to volunteer more hours can be accommodated with different ways to volunteer, such as assisting us with our social media, call support, or marketing. Please register to volunteer on our website, at https://conversationstoremember.org/volunteer. Volunteer: Warner Parks - Nature Discovery Program - Youth Environmental EducationThe Nature Discovery Program is a partnership between Friends of Warner Parks, the Warner Park Nature Center, and Metro Parks Community Centers to reach youth who lack direct access to, and are often underrepresented in, traditional environmental education and outdoor recreation programs. The Nature Discovery Program is activated in a number of ways including: P.E.N. Pals (People Exploring Nature) Summer Camp: brings youth from Metro Parks Community Centers to the Warner Parks for a full day of nature exploration and outdoor adventure! Youth follow their curiosity as they explore the meadow, pond, and garden ecosystems, hike through the forest, observe wildlife, kayak, learn outdoor skills, search for crawdads in the Little Harpeth River, and create lasting memories in nature. P.E.N. Pals (People Exploring Nature) Fall Campfire & Night Hikes: Community Center youth experience the Warner Parks during the fall season. Earlier sunsets and cooler temperatures mean it's time to roast hot dogs, make s'mores, and enjoy time around the bonfire. Youth take a crepuscular hike through the meadows and forests of the Warner Parks and view the night sky while learning about nocturnal creatures. *We are looking for college-aged volunteers to participate in any of these branches of the Nature Discovery program, as the youth often find it easier to connect with this age group. This opportunity is wonderful for those who are interested in education, biology, sustainability, or environmental studies.* Please see below for approximate date ranges throughout the year: If you are interested in volunteering with any of these opportunities, please contact Arabella Pagan at apagan@warnerparks.org for next steps. A background check may be required.
