Volunteer: Warner Parks - Nature Discovery Program - Youth Environmental EducationThe Nature Discovery Program is a partnership between Friends of Warner Parks, the Warner Park Nature Center, and Metro Parks Community Centers to reach youth who lack direct access to, and are often underrepresented in, traditional environmental education and outdoor recreation programs. The Nature Discovery Program is activated in a number of ways including: P.E.N. Pals (People Exploring Nature) Summer Camp: brings youth from Metro Parks Community Centers to the Warner Parks for a full day of nature exploration and outdoor adventure! Youth follow their curiosity as they explore the meadow, pond, and garden ecosystems, hike through the forest, observe wildlife, kayak, learn outdoor skills, search for crawdads in the Little Harpeth River, and create lasting memories in nature. P.E.N. Pals (People Exploring Nature) Fall Campfire & Night Hikes: Community Center youth experience the Warner Parks during the fall season. Earlier sunsets and cooler temperatures mean it's time to roast hot dogs, make s'mores, and enjoy time around the bonfire. Youth take a crepuscular hike through the meadows and forests of the Warner Parks and view the night sky while learning about nocturnal creatures. *We are looking for college-aged volunteers to participate in any of these branches of the Nature Discovery program, as the youth often find it easier to connect with this age group. This opportunity is wonderful for those who are interested in education, biology, sustainability, or environmental studies.* Please see below for approximate date ranges throughout the year: If you are interested in volunteering with any of these opportunities, please contact Arabella Pagan at apagan@warnerparks.org for next steps. A background check may be required. Volunteer: Initial Training for Medicare Volunteers - August 2026 CohortDo you find Medicare interesting? Would you enjoy being a popular resource on all things Medicare for your friends, family and the community? Then this opportunity is for you! Volunteers with the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) will learn how to break up the complicated issue of Medicare into bite size pieces for others and provide assistance to them in choosing the Medicare plans and assistance options (if applicable) that are right for them. You will learn to provide unbiased and accurate information to anyone you assist. SHIP Volunteers will be able to give clients peace of mind and can witness first-hand the impact they are making in the beneficiary's life with the information they provide. This training is designed for new volunteers to the program. Attendance of all activities are required to become certified as a counselor. The classes will build on each other, so it is important not to miss a session. For volunteers who'd like to attend events to share Medicare information and do plan comparisons or administrative work for the program but NO direct client counseling there is the option to attend just up to the second-class session. Any volunteer who would like to be a full counselor will need to attend the full curriculum (all three class sessions as well as participate in the required activities in-between the sessions). Full certification as a counselor requires a minimum of 12 hours of in class training AND additional mentoring thereafter until the volunteer is able to provide counseling on their own. Medicare Volunteer Certification Curriculum Class 1: Thursday, August 6 from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm (virtual via Microsoft Teams) Class 2: Friday, August 14 from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm (in-person at GNRC's offices) Class 3: Friday, August 21 from 9:00 am to 1:30 pm (in-person at GNRC's offices) Part of your training is hands-on experience. You can participate in a variety of different events. The event schedule will be provided during the first session. In addition, we will schedule counseling calls for you to observe. You will be asked to provide your availability to shadow counseling calls prior to the start of the cohort. We will go over the training schedule with you to determine what level of training and commitment is best for you. Application forms and initial conversation with the Volunteer Manager are required for participation. Volunteers who can be involved regularly usually do best with this type of volunteer opportunity as it is very knowledge based. Please reach out with any questions to Rebecca at rnofi@gnrc.org. Stages: Investigation Research and identify potential topics within the broader topic of food choices and environment that are relevant to current legislation or recent articles published in the local press. Organize research and develop a succinct argument that can be written in a few paragraphs. Research press outlets local to the district in which the legislation is being proposed, including student newspapers. Note their submission requirements and methods, including word count and whether they have an online form or accept email submissions. Action Write! Volunteer: Conduct TennCare Client Satisfaction Surveys with older adultsDo you enjoy spending time with older adults? Help us conduct client satisfaction surveys either in person at nursing facilities near you or via phone surveys to ensure satisfactory service outcomes. What are the surveys for? Each year TennCare contracts with state Area Agencies on Aging and Disability to conduct National Core Indicators Surveys with consumers receiving TennCareare services. The core indicators are standard measures used across states to access the outcomes of services provided to individuals and families. Indicators address key areas of concern including planning, rights, community inclusion, choice, health and care coordination, safety and relationships. Each year TennCare looks at the results of these anonymous surveys to improve and enhance services to consumers. Why should I help? Those conducting the surveys are offering consumers and their families a chance to express their opinions about services received, offer suggestions, and make recommendations to enhance their care and quality of life. What would I be doing? The surveyor role requires individuals to reach out to consumers by phone or by traveling to nursing facilities to administer the surveys. We will coordinate with you to assign locations that are close to you. The surveyor will read the questions to each individual and record the responses into a database. This requires the ability to use basic computer skills. Each survey should take from 45 minutes to one hour to complete. Surveyor Training: TennCare requires that all surveyors complete training. The training is in two parts: a series of self-paced online modules (takes about 2 hours to complete), and a 2.5-hour live training with a GNRC staff member. The live webinar trainings will be scheduled as needed. When can I volunteer? In person surveys can be conducted during regular visiting hours of the nursing homes. Phone surveys can be conducted during the day or in the early evening hours. You can make your own schedule and choose how many surveys you want to complete. The survey period runs from December 8 through June 30th. Where would I volunteer? Clients are located all over Middle Tennessee. Training takes place online and volunteers can work via phone from their own home or be assigned to nursing homes close to them. Saddle Up!’s mission is to provide children and youth with disabilities the opportunity to grow and develop through therapeutic, educational and recreational activities with horses. Saddle Up! could not operate without the dedicated help of an army of volunteers from our community. There are numerous positions that require a wide variety of talents. All volunteers MUST attend New Volunteer Training before participating in any of the below listed opportunities. SidewalkersThis volunteer interacts with and helps our special riders. Assigned to a particular rider in a riding lesson, this volunteer helps the rider get the horse ready, helps them get on the horse, and walks next to the rider throughout the mounted portion of the lesson providing support as needed. This is the person most involved with helping our special needs riders. Sidewalkers must be at least 16 years-old and able to walk briskly beside a horse for an average of 30 minutes. There are opportunities to sidewalk on a weekly basis or sub in as a sidewalker on any days when you are available. This volunteer is in charge of a horse in a riding lesson. They pre-groom the horse before the lesson, help with tacking, and lead the horse throughout the lesson. Most riders who have leaders are unable to fully control their horse. After the lesson, they are responsible for putting the horse back where it needs to go and returning all equipment to the tack room. Leaders are volunteers over the age of 16 and must be able to walk at a fast pace for 30 minutes and jog intermittently during the lesson. They should be very comfortable with horses and react calmly if an incident arises. Organization: Saddle Up! Volunteer at Saddle Up!
