Who We Are
The Fisk University Voice Studio's main focus is to develop young singers who study in this studio. This includes opportunities for development hours from training seminars, masterclasses, workshops, and other unique opportunities that the student can participate in.
Professor Gwendolyn Brown teaches Principal and Secondary Voice at Fisk University. An international opera singer, Ms. Brown knows the difficult challenges a young artist faces when working to enter into performance as well as administrative careers in Classical Music, Musical Theater, and other related fields. Therefore, one of the goals of this studio is to inform, educate, introduce opportunities and expand expectations for the students who are currently studying voice.
What We Do
Current Programs this studio is partnered with are as follows:
- Big Blue Opera Initiatives with Nashville Opera - In conjunction with voice students from Tennessee State University, cohorts are invited into this program for development in performance and resume skills towards goals in performance-related classical music fields.
- Coalition for African-Americans in the Performance Arts - This organization works with vocal students at HBCUs with masterclasses and performance opportunities as well as yearly workshops and competitions.
- National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) - This organization conducts masterclasses, competitions, seminars as well as bi-annual conferences to develop Voice Teachers and their students.
- 105 Voices of Freedom - This organization offers performance opportunities, masterclasses, developmental workshops, and competitions for vocal music students who are part of the 105 recognized Black Historical Institutions of Higher Learning (HBCUs).
- Shared Voices/Denyce Graves Foundation - The mission of the Denyce Graves Foundation (DGF) is to promote equity and inclusion in American classical vocal arts through an unprecedented approach: championing the hidden musical figures of the past while uplifting young artists of world-class talent from all backgrounds.
- Opera America HBCU Opera & Musical Theater Collective - The collective's main purpose is to give opportunities to students who are pursuing careers in the performance of opera, recital, and musical theater. Workshops and other opportunities are presented to current students, including internships with opera companies.
Other associations will have similar directives as we build more opportunities for students in voice who wish to perform, teach, and work in related careers in business.
Other volunteer opportunities, as well as developmental opportunities, will be introduced as well.
Students who qualify for Personal Development hours are current Vocal Music Majors in Professor Brown's studio who have been selected by being chosen, through the audition process, or relayed interest in the classical vocal performing arts.
